A Man’s Back, in 5 sessions
In May, 2008 I hired a young Portuguese model to pose for a painting I wanted to do of a seated male nude, inspired by a Charles Bargue sketch I came across in one of my artbooks. One of my students joined me in the project and we generally worked 2 hours each session. At the end of each one, I took a photograph of the work in progress in order to record the information for myself and share the process with others. The final painting measures 80 x 100 cm, or 32 x 39 in, and is oil on linen, painted with five colors: lead white, ivory black, cadmium red light, roman ochre, and cerulean blue.
